Our Top Five Favourite Bingo Ads

  • Online bingo players must be big TV fans if the number of tie in games – Deal or No Deal, X-Factor, Coronation Street – are anything to go by.
  • TV is also a great promotional medium for bingo sites. They have hits and misses (some big misses), sign up new celebrity faces and go off on the weirdest tangents in their efforts to get players to sign-up and play at their site.

Our Top Five Favourite Bingo Ads

The internet is killing TV. So they say. But while the screen in the living room is still limping along there’s still plenty of crossover between the two mediums. Online bingo players must be big TV fans if the number of tie in games – Deal or No Deal, X-Factor, Coronation Street – are anything to go by.

TV is also a great promotional medium for bingo sites. They have hits and misses (some big misses), sign up new celebrity faces and go off on the weirdest tangents in their efforts to get players to sign-up and play at their site.

Bingo site TV ads are a genre all on their own. You’ll have your favourites, no doubt. Here are five small screen gems that have raised a smile at Bingo Bonkers.

Thom Evans has had a varied career. His international rugby career with Scotland was ended by injury (brother Max continues to star for his nation’s team). He subsequently made an attempt to break through in athletics, but couldn’t quite make the grade. That hasn’t stopped Thom though, and he’s now an in-demand model, TV star and would-be actor. He’s got an eye for the ladies too, Kelly Brook is an ex (the couple tragically lost a baby), and he was reported to be dating two Made in Chelsea beauties – Ashley James and Lucy Watson - simultaneously. Thom’s biggest hit though was undoubtedly his stint on the polished floors of Strictly Come Dancing. He partnered Iveta Lukosiute in a five week run in the show. It’s that side of Thom that gets played up in this Dream Bingo advert. Sue from Hull’s dreams come true when Thom arrives in the Dream Bingo van bearing a pug and a plate of donuts. This ad is great fun, is true to Dream’s branding and has star and sex appeal.

Paddy Power have a very cheeky persona with all their brands, and they’ve stayed true to their colours when talking to their bingo audience. The ad features a player asking for some luck, and Paddy responding by sending a giant mechanical pigeon that looks like something out of a Wallace and Gromit cartoon. The reason? Apparently bird poo – in this case gallons of pink paint – is lucky (something that’s passed us by until now). The pigeon proceeds to spread its good luck around, to delighted pink-soaked players. It’s a very off-the-wall and very funny ad, if you have a slightly sick sense of humour. Paddy also take the chance to push their social media presence, which is great marketing.

Mecca Bingo have just updated their TV ad with a very nice looking ad that promotes the idea of bingo friends and bigs up their mobile offering. This one from last Christmas is a bit more bonkers though – which suits us down to the ground. A lady who looks like she’s wandered in from a skin-care commercial is convinced her audience loves dancing cactuses (the secrets in her clipboard). And so we get a dancing cactus! Completely surreal and great fun.

Paddy Power use an animated bird for their ad, but Kitty Bingo link in to their brand image with some real life and very cute animals. It’s a simple offer for free spins, told through one of the oldest battles in the animal world – cat vs dog. This being Kitty Bingo, it’s probably not too much of a spoiler to tell you that the cat wins this little tussle. It doesn’t matter though, the featured pets are cute, smart and manage some nice almost-human touches in their performances. We hope they were well paid!

Gala Bingo has had some big celebrity names backing its brand over the years. Their last few adverts have been all about making stars of ordinary people. “Play happy” has been the watchword, and the infuriatingly catchy Galalala song is at the heart of the action. It’s based on the song, Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. This song is a genuine earworm. It was US number one on its first release, by Steam, in 1969. In the UK it was one of Bananarama’s biggest hits back in 1983. Countless covers have been released and countless adverts use it. Sports fans will know the chorus well, it’s a well-known crowd chant. Gala’s ad gives them a recognisable tune, a friendly image and successfully gets across the message that all sorts of people play bingo. We challenge you not to whistle or hum that tune in the next 24 hours!
